Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death among teens according to the Centers for Disease Control’s Teen Driver Fact Sheet.

Older teens are more likely to be involved in fatal crashes than younger teens. In addition, older teens were twice as likely to be involved in a fatal crash between midnight and 6 am than younger drivers.

1,886 drivers age 15 to 20 died in motor vehicle crashes in 2015, compared with 1,723 drivers in this age group in 2014, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Research shows that when teenage drivers transport teen passengers there is a greatly increased crash risk. The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety released a report in May 2012 that showed that the risk of 16- or 17-year old drivers being killed in a crash increases with each additional teenage passenger in the vehicle. The risk increases 44 percent with one passenger; it doubles with two passengers and quadruples with three or more passengers. The study analyzed crash data and the number of miles driven by 16- and 17-year olds.

Drivers age 16 to 20 accounted for 5.5 percent of all licensed drivers, 8.5 percent of all drivers involved in fatal crashes and 12.0 percent of drivers in all crashes in 2014. Seventeen percent of drivers age 16 to 20 who were involved in fatal crashes in 2014 were alcohol-impaired, which is defined by a blood alcohol concentration of 0.08 grams per deciliter or higher.

The DOT found that more teenagers are involved in motor vehicle crashes late in the day and at night than at other times of the day. Teens also have a greater chance of getting involved in an accident if other teens are present in the vehicle, according to research from the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and State Farm.

36 Percent of 10 – 20 year old male drivers who were involved in fatal crashes where speeding at the time of the crash. NHTSA says that speed-related crashes cost Americans $40.4 billion each year.

Speeding was a contributing factor in 28 percent of all traffic fatalities.

Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death among 16- to 20-year olds, according to the National Center for Health Statistics.

Every state has a graduated driver’s license law that includes a three-phase program to help teens to develop more mature driving attitudes and gain experience behind the wheel.

In 2015, 10,625 people were killed in alcohol-impaired driving crashes.  1,886 drivers age 15 to 20 died in motor vehicle crashes in 2015, compared with 1,723 drivers in this age group in 2014, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Alcohol-impaired driving fatalities accounted for 29 percent of all motor vehicle traffic fatalities in the United States.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation estimates 1,089,171 drivers were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol or narcotics in 2015. The arrest rate works out to one arrest for 200 licensed drivers in the United States.

Teen drivers ages 15 to 20 are 1.6 times more likely to be involved in a fatal crash, compared to adult drivers between the ages of 35 and 40.
